Our Vision

Harmony Works will be the home of inspirational music education and opportunity, enriching and enhancing the lives and futures of young people and their communities across the Region and beyond.

Everyone will feel they belong at Harmony Works, whether they’re a young person making music, a visitor to a concert, a partner renting space or someone drinking tea in our café. All will feel welcomed and supported to make the most of what Harmony Works has to offer.

Harmony Works is built on partnership:

  1. We work with the needs, ideas and creativity of all young people to ensure our activities are relevant and exciting for them.
  2. We collaborate with schools, families and local communities to explore how music can embrace and enhance their routines and rituals.
  3. We build a diverse partnership, locally and nationally, to create and deliver relevant and impactful musical learning.
  4. We ensure our opportunities are accessible to all.

Harmony Works will:

  • Act as a pathway to music – by providing accessible routes to music education, Harmony Works will make sure everyone has a chance to unlock their musical potential.
  • Inspire generations – through the joint magic of music and heritage.
  • Give life to forgotten heritage – by repurposing a historic building and giving it a new purpose, we’re breathing new life into our city’s heritage, while minimising our environmental impact in the process.
  • Increase access – we aim to widen access to music education, reflecting the diversity of the region’s young people.
  • Expand horizons – we’re not just a place, we’re a platform that extends the reach of our co-occupiers and collaborators.
  • Improve wellbeing – from families to communities, we’re here to nurture education and wellbeing for generations, fostering growth and connection.
  • Act as a magnet for talent – we aim to nurture talent and attract top-tier musicians, drawing them to our region as performers and educators.
  • Revive Castlegate – Harmony Works will act as a vital force in the regeneration of Castlegate, bringing with it vital footfall as it develops as a hub of culture and community.
  • Aid recovery and renewal – in a time of recovery for Castlegate, Harmony Works steps up as a beacon of hope and progress, rejuvenating the region with a fresh sense of possibility.

Together, we’re creating impact that spans generations, genres, and communities.

Wellbeing

Making music is a powerful tool that enhances learning, giving young individuals the freedom to explore their own identities and express their emotions. It boosts self-esteem and nurtures mental well-being. Harmony Works will be a safe space for young people to grow, nurturing not just their musical journey, but their overall development too.

In addition to our music facilities, our café will provide affordable and nutritious meals. Young people will be able to access a variety of spaces to suit their needs – from comfy corners to unwind and catch up with friends, to quiet spaces perfect for completing homework.

Engaging with music and culture – whether you’re strumming an instrument, belting out a song, enjoying a performance, or even lending a hand as a volunteer – does wonders for overall wellbeing.

Harmony Works will create opportunities for people to connect with music, the heritage, and the people around them. These connections are proven to boost mental well-being while reducing loneliness, anxiety, and depression.

Heritage & Sustainability

Harmony Works will unlock the doors of one of Sheffield’s treasured historical gems.

Canada House has quite the story to tell. Once home to the Sheffield United Gas Light Company, it played a crucial role in the Victorian technological revolution that swept across the UK – where the use of gas for heating and lighting homes was becoming more and more widespread.

Since then, Canada House has hosted a wide range of activities from Turn-Ups Night Club, the No.1 Chinese Buffet, and most recently, the headquarters of the stylish Panache Lingerie company.

Our goal is to breathe new life into Canada House, revitalising its purpose and using the variety of spaces within, ensuring they are accessible and welcoming to all. As we do this, we’re committed to embracing the most sustainable approach and technology. Our vision for a zero-carbon Canada House includes:

  • Replacing gas as a source of energy by connecting to the Sheffield City district heating network using waste as a low carbon heating source.
  • Retaining original features wherever possible to avoid waste and consumption of new resources.
  • Using passive ventilation systems that will minimise energy consumption.

Situated right at the heart of Castlegate, Canada House is already easily accessible through public transport and more sustainable modes of transport, such as cycling.

You can visit by:

  • Bus: there are numerous bus stops within a two-minute walk and the city centre’s bus station is a five-minute walk away.
  • Tram: there is a tram stop right outside the street-level door.
  • Train: the railway station is a five-minute walk away.
  • Cycle – cycle parking will be available.

Harmony Works, therefore, will be equally accessible from all corners of the region.

Community

Harmony Works will be a space for the local community to participate in and enjoy music and other activities. Our range of opportunities to engage with music – and heritage – will attract people to the area, increasing footfall to Castlegate, and contributing to its ongoing regeneration.

The introduction of a café open to all will encourage a sense of community from within Harmony Works.

The Castlegate area is a vibrant hub filled with arts, culture, and a sense of belonging – with organisations such as the National Videogame Museum, Kommune, Pollen Market, S1 Arts Space, Plot 22, Al-Andalus, Exchange Street Collective, SADACCA, and Yorkshire Artspace also calling the area home.

Castlegate is taking centre stage as a priority area for regeneration and benefitting from Sheffield Gateway Levelling Up Funding. This will create a better place to live, work and visit, whilst reconnecting with Sheffield’s rich heritage, of which Harmony Works will form a part.
