Canada House Undergoes Survey in Latest Milestone for Harmony Works

A detailed structural survey has taken place at Canada House, the Grade II* Listed building which is earmarked to become Harmony Works’ new home for music education in Sheffield.

As part of the work funded by the NLHF Development Grant, a detailed structural survey took place in August 2023 by the GBG Group following a full tender and specification by built environment expert and project collaborator Arup.

GBG are specialists in investigating historically significant buildings that require expert appraisal and attention to detail when assessing their construction and condition.

Their work at Canada House involved invasive explorations of the structure throughout the building and materials testing. Their job was to ensure that the Harmony Works’ future design team know as much as possible about the existing condition of the building and are aware of any and all repair work that may be necessary ahead of the restoration and refurbishment of the building.

One of the most exciting parts of GBG’s work involved a timber survey above the Victorian domed hall (pictured). The timber beams were found to be in good condition, another successful milestone met on the journey to creating a home for Harmony Works.

The team also uncovered some original floorboards on the first floor.

Harmony Works’ plans to restore and revitalise Canada House. They aim to make the most of the building’s space, retaining its unique heritage features, whilst making sure that it is equipped with the very best acoustic design and facilities for performance, to meet the needs of Sheffield’s diverse and talented young musicians.
