Success with Proms in the Playground!

On September 29 2023, children at Beck Primary School in Shiregreen joined the thousands of other school children from nine other inner-city schools in Sheffield who have experienced playing a brass instrument.

The culmination concert at Beck Primary came at the end of a week of music-making as part of the Proms in the Playground scheme, supported by Arts Council England and the Neill Trust and in partnership with Sheffield Music Hub, Sheffield Music Academy, Brass Bands England and Music in the Round.

Supported by musicians from Sheffield Music Academy and Oughtibridge Brass Band, the students performed an energetic and varied programme, including Shotgun by George Ezra, The Wellerman Song and Mamma Mia, played masterfully by the cornet players while their fellow performers sang along.

Helen Minshall, Youth Development Brass Specialist at Brass Bands England said “It has been absolutely fantastic. It’s been non-stop, full of life, full of music. Every school we’ve visited has had between 30 and 60, sometimes up to 90 instrumentalists playing everything from pBuzzes to cornets and trumpets.”

Friends and family packed the hall to support the young musicians as well as watching via live stream. BBC Look North covered the concert and the feature can be watched below.
