Following the success of securing Levelling Up Funding Sheffield Music Academy and Sheffield Music Hub have appointed award-winning architects Evans Vettori to lead the re-development of Canada House as a grade II* building.
Emily Peters, Project Director said, “I’m delighted that Evans Vettori will be bringing their design brilliance to transform Canada House into Harmony Works. Their vision will open up the building with spaces for young musicians from across Sheffield and the South Yorkshire region to make and enjoy music of all kinds. We are looking forward to working together to enable a sensitive and inspiring restoration of a historic key building, which will be accessible, environmentally sustainable.”
Architect Robert Evans commented: “We are delighted to have been appointed to develop a new vision and planning application for Sheffield Music Academy at Canada House. An ambitious project to give music education in the city a dedicated home could not be more exciting and will give Sheffield a musical asset and long-lasting musical legacy it deserves. Not only is this a great brief with an enthusiastic client, Canada House is a remarkable building. With each visit and piece of research you fall more in love with the building which will make an incredible back drop for outstanding young musician to develop their skills.”
Evans Vettori is an award-winning practice of architecture and interior design based in Matlock. They have a diverse portfolio of exciting projects, many of complex nature, and often set within a historic context. Two recently completed projects include the refurbishment and extension to Square Chapel Arts Centre set within at Grade II* listed Congregational Chapel in Halifax neatly linking into the adjoining Grade 1 listed Piece Hall. The project enhances the existing facilities with a large foyer/café space, multi-use performance space, step-free access and re-organisation of the chapel layout. The second is a new environment centre for Nottingham Trent University sitting in the grounds of, and adjacent to, the listed Brackenhurst Hall providing teaching, office and social space for the campus. The building sensitively takes cues from the Old Hall and grounds responding to materials, scale form, views and external space.
The architects will develop detailed plans over the next few months with stakeholders and Sheffield city council for approval by Summer 2022.
